About the Lab:
The Logic and Language Lab is headed by Dr. Raj Singh and Dr. Ida Toivonen. The LOLA Lab is primarily concerned with discovering true and essential properties of natural language. Logic is used as both a theoretical tool but is also a subject of inquiry (since natural language contains logical operators and makes use of logical reasoning). The lab also has an applied branch in which we develop intelligent computational systems to solve practical problems in partnership with industry and government partners (e.g., with RBC AI Labs, the Dept. of National Defence, PaymentEvolution).

The LOLA LAB aims to increase our knowledge of language and thought, as well as to use this knowledge to develop systems that can do useful things. Student training and development is a central focus of our lab. We have trained and collaborated with dozens of students - undergraduate, master's, PhD, and postdocs.

The LOLA Lab is committed to equity, diversity, and inclusion in both the makeup of the lab and the manner in which it operates. Indeed, we have been active in leading EDI initiatives at the departmental level, in our faculty union, and beyond the university setting as well.

Our lab has received generous funding from SSHRC, OCI, and MITACS.
